Intracavitary cidofovir for human herpes virus-8-associated primary effusion lymphoma in an HIV-negative patient.

چکیده
Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that mainly occurs in immunodeficient patients and is associated with infection by human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8). It develops in serous cavities, causing lymphomatous effusions in the absence of lymphadenopathy or organomegaly.1,2 Previous studies suggested that PEL occurs almost exclusively in HIVinfected patients. It was first described in association with Kaposi sarcoma.1,2 Subsequently, the authors of several studies demonstrated that PEL develops in non-AIDS patients with HHV-8 infection, suggesting that HHV-8 infection plays a key role in PEL.3 We report a rare case of HHV-8–positive PEL in an elderly, HIV-negative woman who presented with pleural effusion and was in clinical remission after intracavitary cidofovir. We also review the few recent reports of nonAIDS–related HHV-8–positive PEL.

A 78-year-old male of Italian heritage was evaluated for progressive shortness of breath over two months and recurrent pleural effusions. He had a 5-year history of fluctuating anemia and mild lymphadenopathy and had previously undergone a bone marrow examination that was normal. An excisional lymph node biopsy revealed only reactive changes. Upon evaluation, he had bilateral pleural effusions,...

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that presents with serosal effusion in body cavities, without obvious tumor masses. Although PEL occurs in immunocompromised patients that are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, it also occurs in immunocompetent human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8)-positive patients. Herein we present an immunocompetent, HIV-negative, CD-2...

Recent molecular evidence suggests an association with a new herpes virus, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV/HHV-8), and primary effusion lymphomas (PEL). PELs have a characteristic morphology, phenotype, and clinical presentation with malignant effusions in the absence of a contiguous solid tumor mass. Most cases of PEL have occurred in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive ...

Human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8)-associated primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is an unusual lymphoma confined to the body cavities, which primarily affects human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive men at high risk for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). We describe two HIV-negative elderly Italian men, who developed pleural HHV-8-positive PEL in association with other diseases (systemic hypertension, colonic c...
